Sludgie the Whale Scavanger Hunt, Pin, Stickers, and Buttons

Sludgie the Whale was a baby whale that accidentally swam into the canal and a kind mascot for the canal. We created the Sludgie the Whale Scavanger Hunt in his honor. By going on the hunt you learn about the canal, why it’s so dirty, hoe they are cleaning up, and about the animals and plants that live here despite it being so dirty. Gowanus Souvenir Jigsaw Puzzle

Black Mayo Pin

A glow in the dark pin that renders a print by artist George Horner and Miguel Ayuso. Black Mayo is the official term for the 20 feet of toxic sludge at the bottom of the canal.

Gowanus Landmarksmap

As a lover of maps we had a lot of maps at the shop and also made some ourselves. This map features a core number of historic buildings in Gowanus with short descriptions of the buildings history, and indications if the buildings were landmarked, at risk, or their fate yet undecided. The map comes as a print for display and as a small folded map. After some buildings were landmarked and others were torn down we manually updated the map with “SAVED” and “LOST” stamps. All building drawings were made by Vivian Baumann.

Gowanus Souvenir Superfun Trucker Hat

Playing on the fact that the Gowanus Canal is a Superfund Site — a designation given by the EPA for the worst of polluted sites — we created this much loved staple of our shop. Black Yupoong Hat with stiched print.

Gowanus Souvenir Beach Towel

Every canal needs its own towel. Mimicking the classic tropes of all good resort hotel graphics, we included stars (5 of course), a crown, and est. dates.

CD Design for Elio Villafranca

Album design, including CD jewelcase, booklet and CDs, and promotional materials, and website.

For Elio Villafranca’s Grammy nominated album we created a handwritten title font to reference the Kongolese religious signage, so called firmas, that are part of Cuban history. The firmas appear on the over and CDs.
